I had a blast going to the Kansas City Chiefs Monday Night Football game- I snapped this pic right before the game started and did a quick color edit in Photoshop to get it just right. It’s amazing what point-n-shoots can do now. You just have to spend time doing your homework- so you know all the settings and how to use it.

We hiked to the top of Helen Hunt Falls in Colorado Springs!

117 Shipping Containers = ART in Kansas City!

Thanks to TKC and local b.a. photog Eric Bowers, I saw through my feeds about a new art installation you can checkout, near Liberty Memorial in Kansas City. There are 117 stacked containers, and it can withstand over 90MPH winds (KMBC has an article). Check out this video blog I shot of the art project AND I even did an interactive 360 panoramic photo as well.

BTW, my mic + audio got jacked, so you’ll noticed i had to re-dub the last parts of the audio on the later cuts in video. [sigh]

Sometimes I like to take photos for fun. Photography is just a hobby for me, i dabble (i’m not good enough to make it a full-time gig) . That said, I haven’t edited the full set yet, but i took portraits of my friend Ben yesterday- this one is on the entrance walkway at the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts here in Kansas City.

Out in California for a project for Timberland!

Greetings from San Francisco! This week has been exciting. I’ve been traveling for work on a video blog assignment for Timberland (one of my clients). I’ve been shooting and producing footage (with the wonderful co-star Amanda Dunne!) for a couple of Fall campaigns that will be released later this year. One of the shoots was in San Francisco, and required us to bounce around town. I snapped these pictures and video with my iPhone (and edited them with Camera+ <– i like this app a lot).

I’m no professional photog like my friends Rebecca, Jason or Eric, but I do like to have fun taking photos as a hobby. This photo below is my favorite of all the engagement photos I shot of my friend Jamie and Chris (i’ll post more later). We took these in Lawrence, KS. It was a gorgeous day on campus (I’m an alumnus to KU) and we had fun walking around trying different things. Doing photo projects like this always remind me of the appreciation I have for my favorite professional photog friends like Rebecca, Eric, or Jason, who make this stuff look so easy every day and inspire me ← and it’s not just “having a nice camera” that makes the shot

I had to use some Photoshop on this photo below to fix the graffiti on the garage door. I still have so much to learn when it comes to really learning how to use all of the features in Photoshop. This garage was such a cool backdrop, but the “extra” words someone spray-painted on it had to go. Used some clone stamp magic to fix this photo

Video blogging in Boston for Timberland! w00t!

I meant to post this stuff sooner, but I just got back from Boston! Wow, that was fun. And it was for work. Is that possible? Like I mentioned in my previous video blog, I was there shooting footage for Timberland. Check out this video blog Amanda and I took the morning of the shoot. Annnnnnnd I should tell you, I filmed this with my iPhone and almost dropped my phone in the beginning of the vblog! You’ll see.

Look how awesome the view was out my window when I landed in Kansas City today! (taken with my point-n-shoot Canon S95, post edit in Photoshop). I was so happy to be home after quite the run-around trying to get back home. I was in Boston on Monday for meetings, I had no clue that #snowmageddon was going to take on the U.S. by storm (literally). My layover lasted overnight in Dallas. Even Texas was hit hard with ice! #gladtobehome #ilovekansascity

SNOWMAGEDDON hit Boston (i think it does every year). I was there for meetings with @Timberland, and I took this picture from the 11th floor, looking out my hotel window (this is with my point-n-shoot S95, it has a tilt-shift function).

‎I also took this picture of the postman while walking the streets in snowy Boston (again, took this with my point-n-shoot S95, using the tilt-shift feature. the more i learn how to use the features of this camera, the more i love it)

I stopped by the KCPT studios the other day for a meeting. During the tour of the TV station, we went outside under the TV/radio tower …so of course i whipped out my iPhone and took this photo and this short video. This perspective of the tower + metal construction is impressive! I remember walking under it and looking up and saying, “WHOA, this is awesome!” (i just wish i had my nice video camera with me…)

Halloween is one of my favorite holiday’s of the year. I think you’re never too old to get dressed up in a costume for Halloween, and make a complete idiot of yourself! My costume this year didn’t top previous year’s legendary costumes …like cutting my hair to look like Kanye West or building a helicopter hat to look like Inspector Gadget. BUT, I still had fun with it. This year, I decided to be the YouTube viral -slash- TV commercial sensation, the “Old Spice guy”. When my parents come to visit me in Kansas City, they love going to City Market (farmers market). This weekend, they dropped into town and I brought along with me my newly re-purchased Canon S95. You read that right …re-purchased. I lost my camera at a Halloween party earlier this month. Bummer huh? Oh well. The good news is the S95 is the new point-n-shoot model of the camera I had. Below are a couple shots from the full set of photos I took with it.

The top two photos below have the “tilt-shift” effect applied, something that’s an option on the camera. Pretty neat huh?

Video Blog + Photos: Tour of the KC Soccer Stadium

This weekend I toured the new Kansas City soccer stadium being built for the Wizards (it’s still under construction till June 2011). I shot a quick ‘n short video blog to show you what the progress on the construction looks like. It’s impressive isn’t it!? I played soccer growing up (through high school), so I’ve always been a big fan. This stadium is GOING TO BE INCREDIBLE! (i’m excited for it, if you can’t tell). *update*, the Kansas City Wizards blog has linked to this.

A few facts about the stadium (more):

- Canopy roof
- 300 HDTVs

This weekend, I went to my FIRST rodeo The American Royal provided me access to this year’s PRCA ProRodeo (in Kansas City) and gave me free reign to capture whatever was blog worthy. These are my favorite photos from attending NASCAR this weekend. Even though my ears are still rattling from the sound of the cars, it was a blast. My favorite part was using the radios we rented to tune-in and hear the drivers and pit crew talk to each other. The entire photo slideshow is posted on my flickr.

Since I’ve purchased my Canon S90, I’ve learned that my point-and-shoot camera can produce awesome results. You don’t need to buy an expensive DSLR to get fun and awesome photos. Take for instance, this one. This photo was taken right outside of Wrigley Field, walking out of a 7-Eleven. We were just making a quick pit-stop and as we were walking out I pulled out my camera for a quick action shot (from my hip). Doesn’t this photo remind you of a movie poster? It’s the candid facial expressions from my friends, that make this seemingly like a scene from a movie. I really like this one. I’ve learned that my favorite photos are just fantastic accidents that happen to have really good timing. I took this photo when I was in Chicago. This weekend, I was driving downtown here in Kansas City this weekend and had to stop in the street to let ELEPHANTS cross the street. Awesome. The Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey were in town performing at the Sprint Center and their afternoon show had just ended. I was lucky enough to run into them walking back the elephants. Pretty neat huh!? (fyi: i posted the set to flickr).

After coming home from a business trip last week, I was waiting for the bus at KCI (Kansas City International Airport, who is a client) and I remember turning my head- looking up- and being hit swiftly in the face with one of the most stunning skyscapes I’ve ever seen. I even uttered the words, “oh my god” when I saw this. This was taken at 9:00 PM at night (which is hard to believe right?) and the opening in the sky disappeared only 1-minute after I noticed it. I believe what happened here was a storm has just passed through Kansas City, and what I was seeing was a rare opening /break in the thunderstorm clouds, with the sunset bouncing and reflecting up and through the opening.

It’s an incredible shot, don’t you think?

I have a lot of fun with photography. Sometimes there are shots you take that are very contrived and staged. You position something, move it, adjust it, tweak it, and get it just right. And with enough practice, you can grab a good picture here and there. However, my favorite photos, are the ones you don’t setup or plan for.

Back in 2008, I got to meet one of my favorite local photographers, Mike McMullen. I have purchased a couple framed prints from him, and I’m a huge fan of his work. I had a chance to interview him in a video blog, and he said something, I’ll never forget, that I can especially relate to when describing how I came across taking this photo above. Mike shared…

“Sometimes you just happen to recognize something, and it’s very compelling, and as soon as you know it- there it is- all I can do is screw this up. It just happens to hit you over the head- and wow, I’m so lucky I’m here …all I can do is screw it up.”

I only could take 2 shots of this skyscape with my point-n-shoot Canon S90 before the bus pulled up. And I’m so lucky to have seen it myself and get to share this with you. It’s incredible don’t you think?

Cliche as it may be, at the beginning of each year, I’m one of “those people” who outline their personal goals for the year. Rewind back in January, I remember grabbing dinner, and having a casual conversation with my friend Adam, to talk about events we wanted to attend and things we wanted to do. We both agreed 2010 was the year we wanted to skydive. No questions about it. At the time, we didn’t realize what we were signing up for…

AWESOME!

I jumped out of a plane at 10,000 feet and fell at speeds around 150MPH. It was every bit of intense as you’d imagine it to be! The wind noise on the initial free-fall was the loudest thing I’ve ever heard. Oddly enough, the abrupt silence that follows catches you by surprise as well. There is no place in the world, more quiet and calm, than the moments up in the air, right after your ripcord is pulled on your parachute. The stomach sensation was nothing at all what I envisioned it to feel like, it’s a completely different feeling than when you dive into a pool or jump off a cliff.

I posted a set of photos from the jump to my flickr stream. If you’re wondering, we went to Skydive Kansas City. It was fantastic! And I’d do it again, and again. I can see how this could get addicting…
