Chad Ochocinco PLAYING SOCCER for Sporting KC!!!

Yesterday, Sporting Kansas City asked me to come out and watch Chad Johnson, better known as @OchoCinco, tryout for MLS Soccer. Yeah, awesome huh!? (i was excited, i love soccer, i played competitive soccer growing up and i’ve had 2 ACL surgeries b/c of soccer), so I’m a *big* fan of the sport. I posted this video blog to show you what I saw watching @OchoCinco tryout for Sporting KC (formerly known as the Wizards). I also took some pictures and posted them to flickr. Enjoy!

This is what it looks like UNDER the KCPT TV tower

I stopped by the KCPT studios the other day for a meeting. During the tour of the TV station, we went outside under the TV/radio tower …so of course i whipped out my iPhone and took this photo and this short video. This perspective of the tower + metal construction is impressive! I remember walking under it and looking up and saying, “WHOA, this is awesome!” (i just wish i had my nice video camera with me…)

The Ugly Christmas Sweater Party grabbed some press!

This blog post is a collection of some of the pictures and video from this year’s 6th Annual, 2010 Ugly Christmas Sweater Party. It was incredible to see all of the unsolicited coverage we received this year from the local media and bloggers. Myself and the entire steering committee continue to be humbled about all the help we’ve received to promote the cause! After all, this keg party just started in our basement!

We were asked to come on the NBC morning show to talk about the party + the toy drive we setup @The Roasterie

A guest who attended the party, shot, edited, and posted a video blog of the night! It was so cool that Leah Stephens aka STELLABELLE did this!

Every year, we’re fortunate enough that we’ve had Zach Cobb donate his free time to take professional pictures for the party. This year, Zach and his business partner Simon, donated their time and services on behalf of their company, Westside Studio. Here are the official party pictures from this year’s party.

Social Media and The Ugly Christmas Sweater Party

Last week I had the privilege of presenting to the entire Social Media Club of Kansas City. I shared the story of how myself and my friends took a homegrown, no-budget benefit party from a just dream + an idea …to reality + success. In just 2 years, we’ve thrown two sold-out parties and raised over $25,000 for our favorite local charity, Operation Breakthrough. Myself and my friends dedicate time each year to plan this party. We aren’t affiliated with any one organization – we’re just a group of friends who want to give back to our community.

Below is a video of the presentation I gave that was recorded and live-streamed. In the preso, I discussed how our event is social-media-fueled, and our efforts in promoting the party are purely digital. I also share “stupid simple tips” and lessons that we’ve learned.

I’m still pinching myself, thinking about how much we’ve already accomplished in giving back to Kansas City + Operation Breakthrough. However, the one thing I know is true …the best has yet to come.

Video Blog: MY FIRST RODEO @ the American Royal

Have you ever been to a rodeo before? This weekend, I went to my FIRST rodeo The American Royal provided me access to this year’s PRCA ProRodeo and gave me free reign to capture whatever was blog worthy. I had no idea what to expect …and I’ve got to say, I had a blast.

Here’s the video blog I cut to share with you what it’s like @the American Royal rodeo:

The bottom-line? Rodeos are FUN! For those with small-n-short attention spans (like me), the competition moves quickly from event to event. You never get too much of 1 thing. Of course, the bull riding at the end, is the most fun to watch. I’d for sure go again with friends and/or my family.

Tickets are cheap too, they start at $17 (which you can get online). This year’s rodeo is the biggest in American Royal history. It’s part of the Gold Tour season for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Translation? …you’ll see the best riders, ropers and wrestlers in the world. If you’re familiar with the sport, the competitors include: Trevor Brazile, Fred Whitfield, Will Lowe, Shery Cervi, Stran Smith and many others.

This weekend, I was driving downtown here in Kansas City this weekend and had to stop in the street to let ELEPHANTS cross the street. Awesome. The Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey were in town performing at the Sprint Center and their afternoon show had just ended. I was lucky enough to run into them walking back the elephants. Pretty neat huh!? (fyi: i posted the set to flickr).

Video Blog: 1-minute tour of the Liberty Memorial

Did you know you can take an elevator to the top of Liberty Memorial? The 360-degree view at the top is incredible!

The Liberty Memorial is easily the most recognizable landmark in Kansas City. It’s part of the National World War I museum, the only American museum solely dedicated to the war. It’s really cheap to go (around $10-$12) and it’s filled with lots of interesting stuff. Most people say you need about 2-3 hours to take it all in at a relaxed pace. If you just want to go up on the tower, it’s really cheap ($4) and only takes a couple minutes. They’re open Tuesday – Sunday, 10AM – 5PM (check the website for all the details).

NOTE: I actually shot this video blog last year, but I just discovered the footage on a camera recently! I didn’t like the clips when I first shot this last year. After stumbling upon it again- when I was clearing HD space, I decided to do a quick edit and post the video. I’m proud of KC and I love this town! So I figured I wanted to pass on the good word of another fun thing you can do here in KC.

Do you remember how good Kansas City Royals were at baseball in the 80′s? How about the amazing KC Chiefs in the 1970s?

I want more than anything to have a hometown winning team again.

People talk about what an exciting time it was to live in this city during those years. Yesterday, was a glimpse of what it would be like to have a winning home team …and a soccer team at that! 52,000+ people watched the KC Wizards beat Manchester United. Sure it may have been their “B” team players (but there were at least 3-4 of their top tier players in the lineup for ManU). This past weekend, I continued my recent 2010 i-run-in-races obsession new hobby by participating in Brew-to-Brew. I took my camera with me to capture moments of my friends in their running glory. I’ve posted all the picture to my flickr.

So what is Brew-to-Brew? It’s a day long relay running race in which your team runs a combined 43+ miles from Kansas City to Lawrence, Kansas (you run from one beer brewing company to another). I had a blast at this race. It’s much more relaxed than most. I ran the last leg of our team’s relay. 4.6 miles of “remember-the-college-days-gloryness” running into gorgeous Lawrence, over the river and past City Hall

There is one unique thing about this race thing I observed; running is typically a very solo, individual, self-motivated sport. This relay race format, makes it very team focused (which is awesome!) You can’t help but be cheesy supportive to your teammates, yelling and cheering them on during each of their portions of the relay. If you’ve got a group of friends into running- check this out next year, it’s a great time.

I dragged my friends outside for 10-minutes during the snow this weekend to take some quick pictures. I wanted to practice, practice and practice. This is one of the many things a friend of mine, Rebecca Peters has taught me. I’m thankful of her +other great friends who motivate me to get better and better and the things I love to do. The photos I took are on my flickr account.

My roommate, wears these boots- and I like the colors on them- so i wanted to try using them as a focus for a shot.

It’s been snowing a little super-ridiculously here in Kansas City. And get this;

it was colder here this weekend than it was in Anchorage, Alaska!

Some people really hate the cold and the snow, but all I wanted to do was GO SLEDDING! My best friend Scott and I tore up the slopes hills with our manly plastic purple sleds I was daring enough to grab my flipcam and shot this short-n-sweet vblog. Great footage of the wipe-outs and why my body is extremely sore today (special thanks to my Twitter friends @AngiePedersen @TheKCBigE @ksaim @Jayblondie315 @8Ball_ who reassured me you are never too old to go sledding!)

Video Blog: “Tour of Missouri” bike race

Each year- the Tour of Missouri bike race comes through Kansas City. I’m not a huge fan of professional cycling, but I was intrigued when I found out that the majority of the riders from this years Tour de France (except for Lance Armstrong) were in this race. I have never seen a bike race before- so myself and a couple friends decided to check out the race.

What’s great about this year’s race, was the course wasn’t just routed through in Kansas City- the ENTIRE race was a closed circuit within Kansas City. That said, it was fun to move to different areas on the course to get a different view of the bikers each time they came through.

In my opinion, bike races aren’t really that exciting live, but it was a fun experience- especially seeing world class athletes race through the streets of Kansas City. Video Blog: “Kansas City Air Show ’09″

This past weekend was the annual Kansas City Downtown Air Show and I vblogged it (full disclosure: they hooked me up with free press access again!).

Overall, last year’s show was better (last year’s vblog here), but there were some highlights. I had a chance to interview pilots who fly the A-10 “Warthog” and the Apache helicopter. I snapped some pretty sweet photos too. The Harrier “jump” jet was cool- something I personally had never seen first-hand +easily the loudest jet I’ve ever heard. The other highlight of the show was the F-16, it’s speed and nimble ability to perform tricks was incredible to watch. Check out the full video blog on YouTube (below).

PS: I’ve been editing my video blogs with my new Mac! (that’s right, I made the switch). While I’m still a PC fan- I can confidently say my Mac Pro desktop rocks-my-socks off in editing HD video. It handles HD like a champ!

The annual downtown Kansas City Air Show was this weekend- and I was eager to photowalk the event and see what I could capture. Each time I get my camera out- I sometimes find myself in situations that remind me of a quote Mike McMullen shared with me (in a video blog) last year. While it’s not the most elegant quote, it’s completely on-point and accurate. He shares:

“Sometimes that perfect composition slaps you up side the head- and wow, I’m so lucky I’m here- all I can do is screw it up.”

As I’m learning and trying to improve more and more with my own photography (as a hobby), I know first hand what he means. There are those times when you find yourself staring at the perfect photo- it’s almost yelling “HEY YOU, this is the shot right here!” It’s up to you to just get it just right and not screw it up.

All that said- I was pleased and surprised with some of the shots that came out from this year’s air show. Tracking and following speeding airplanes through the sky isn’t something I find myself doing a lot of Enjoy the photos and check out the full flickr slideshow here. Video Blog: “Behind the scenes” @Kansas City Star photo shoot.

Recently I was interviewed by ink magazine about my Event Blogging that I cover here in Kansas City. One aspect feature piece for the magazine / website was photos of each Kansas City blogger- and I brought my camera to use for my shoot and I figured while I was there, why not record a “behind the scenes” take on what it was like to be there. I’ll be the first to admit- I don’t think this vblog is one of my more compelling ones, but it does give you an candid look at my experience. I had fun doing it (side note: its hard to imagine how models gripe about posing for photos, maybe I’m missing something!?!).

Video Blog: “Jazzoo 2009 in 1-minute”

I recently shot a video blog of Jazzoo and I wanted to share it as well quick thoughts about this vblog. For the past few years I’ve attended Jazzoo- a fundraiser to help the local Kansas City Zoo and it’s programs. It’s a great creative black-tie formal event held every year.

When I vblog or event cast- I’m usually able to balance capturing good footage of the event while still having a fun attending it as well. But, I’ll admit- it wasn’t easy to do this at first and took a while to master this (it’s easy to get caught up in just shooting footage).

That said, I wanted to preface this video blog with the disclaimer that I wasn’t able to get all the footage I wanted. Not even close. In fact, I got so little- I was only able to scrape together bits and pieces. In my mind, this is WAY below average execution for me. Enjoy it for what it’s worth, but I thought I’d at least tell you first. I’m still posting it since I strongly believe in supporting our great Zoo here in Kansas City (disclaimer: they are a client of the firm I work for).

I’m a huge fan of The Crossroads area since many of the businesses are KC originals/local establishments. More importantly, they serve some of the best food KC has to offer. Video Blog: “AMC Mainstreet Theater”

AMC invited local bloggers to come preview their new theater in Downtown Kansas City. AMC Mainstreet, the theater, orginally opened in 1921, but now has been renovated and upgraded (to say the least). They gave me access to the new theater and I willingly decided to shoot a vBlog to give everyone a ‘preview’ before it’s open to the public. Check out my video blog for a complete tour of the place, it’s not your typical movie theater. I also snapped a few photos with my camera which you can view on my flickr account.

Here is the quick bottom-line about the new theater in my opinion:

Truthfully the food (that you order in the movie theater) isn’t amazing. It’s like bar food — not gourmet.
In my opinion, the audio setup, screen-size and seating comfort justifies the higher price you pay to watch a movie.
The seats all have speakers in them that rumble when action scenes appear in the movie. Cheesy as that may sound, when I watched a movie there it was freakin’ cool to watch actions scenes with your seat shaking.
You can order beer and they bring it to you = cool
You’re able to reserve specific seats online or by phone so you don’t have to show up extra early to get a good spot.

Can bloggers and journalists co-exist?

1 of my goals I blogged about for 2009 was: “try new things out with my video blogs”. And I’m doing exactly that. Aaron Barnhart from the Kansas City Star has followed www.ramseymohsen.com and my vblogs for a while and we’ve only just exchanged thoughts on various topics over email. An opportunity and idea came up and we both agreed it would be fun to try out a video blog and meetup. FYI, I wasn’t paid to do the vblog. All my vblogs I’ve done have been always been by a concious choice to do them for free. I enjoy it.

What I felt was the most interesting is reflecting on the collaboration between an independent blogger/new media type (myself) and the old media (Newspaper publication). While the results and feedback have yet to roll-in and be evaluated, I’m happy with the results and the experience.

There are several conversations about the possible need for ‘next gen’ journalists needing skill sets that allow them to grasp, utilize and execute over all forms of media (online/blogs, print, video, audio, etc.) but there are not many conversations and/or strategies about how collaboration between the old media and new media have the potential to do great things. One could argue, journalists and bloggers are fighting for attention — why not work together?

What do you think? Can journalists and independent bloggers co-exist? Collaborate?

The video blog we shot is in regards to the Tea Party rallies that are going on across the country today. More than 300 locations in all 50 states will hold rallies to protest higher taxes and out-of-control government spending. In the vblog, Steve and Aaron debated if the Fairness Doctrine needs to be restored by congress. The Fairness Doctrine was struck down in 1987 and required broadcasters to present both sides of controversial issues in a manner that is honest, equitable and balanced.

Anyone who lives in the Midwest knows the weather here is completely unpredictable. Take for example the weather we had this weekend: 6 inches of snow on Saturday, 60 degrees 50 degrees and sunny on Sunday!

I took 2 photos on my street at exactly the same time, 24-hours apart, in roughly the same area, just to prove how crazy Kansas City weather is. This kind weather sure doesn’t make for a boring life here in KC — ammirite?

Video Blog: “Red Ball”.

I went to the American Red Cross benefit here in Kansas City this past weekend — it’s an event fundraiser for the Red Cross. It’s only in its second year, but it’s doing well. The company I work for, Digital Evolution Group is also a big sponsor of the event. So naturally, it’s also a fun event for myself and my co-workers to let loose (we geeks still know how to party).

I snapped some photos and shot a video blog, check ‘em out. You’ll notice with this vblog — I’m trying some new things out, adding a little more mature ‘cinematography’ (if you will), basically I’m mixing up, just trying to try a different style. I want to evolve my presentation and find what works and what doesn’t. As always, love any feedback positive or negative from the community, it helps me get better!

As dorky as it is to admit, I’m a fan of typography. So much so, I read blogs about it — and I like talking about it. I’m not expert at typography, but I’m absolutely a fan. I’d even buy t-shirts like this one or this one here. That being said, this weekend one of my favorite typesets is this sign at the Cosentino’s grocery store. And if my typography senses are calibrated right, I pretty sure their logo is Century Gothic Regular. I had to capture a photo of it just to satisfy my dangerous font obsession wheeeeew, don’t worry, I feel better now.

I donated a video blog to, “charity:water”

In 2008, myself and a committee of friends planned from the ground up, the 4th Annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party which raised over $7,000 to a local organization here in Kansas City. One of the key takeaways from that experience was finding there’s a lot of people out there that sincerely want to do good in this world, they just don’t haven’t had the right opportunity to do it.

Enter, Twestival. In short, this event utilizes social media (Twitter) to empower an existing community to do good. It’s mission is to provide access to safe, clean drinking water to developing nations by drilling wells. The non-profit organization charity: water was clever enough to strike the attention of the Twitter community — there are over 100+ cities organizing individual events with all of them being 100% volunteer driven.

I decided, I wanted to give back — not just by attending the Kansas City gathering, but raising awareness by putting together a video blog. While I did not organize the event, I figured the least I could do was help promote it in any way that I could. What better than with a video blog!?! Photowalking: “snowboarding in Kansas City”

Here in downtown Kansas City, the Scion Snowboarding Open was held in the middle of the Power and Light district. A pretty cool idea to generate PR for Scion while still making it a fairly interesting event for people to come out and see. It definitely helped that it was a gorgeous day in KC (about 70 degrees, which is unreal for February) so I decided to walk out my backdoor to check out this event. Video Blog: Mmmm… steak! (Fogo de Chao)

There’s a new restaurant here in Kansas City opening on the Plaza called Fogo de Chao (pronounced fo-go dee shown). They asked me to come taste the food before the grand opening and of course I brought along my camera to snap some photos and recorded a video blog with my flip.

The place is considered a “Brazilian steakhouse” — they serve over 15 different types of roasted meats in which “Gaucho” chefs cut and serve right at your table. Basically you sit at your table and have a card that has both a red and a green side. When a chef passes by and notices your card is flipped to green, he will ask if you would like the particular meat he’s carrying — and then serve the meat to you. The whole dinner is a pretty interactive experience.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised. The salad bar was unexpectedly awesome (you’ve gotta try it), but you can’t fill-up on salad because there’s so many meats to try and you really need to save room for all of it. The best part is all of the meat is served warm and tastes so fresh (unlike some of my backyard grill creations). It’s a bit pricey at $24 for lunch, $42 for dinner, but it’s worth it. I’d say it’s probably not a place you’d want to go to every week. However, it is a great place to take a group of friends large or small.
